The Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) is a research facility that promotes a connection between people and the environment located in Eleuthera, The Bahamas. Our holistic approach to island ecosystems and the bond between primary research and education helps to create models of effective resource management and sustainable development. In turn, these model systems help to enhance conversation initiatives and economic prosperity at local, regional, and global scales. With a diverse array of virtually unexplored environments at our doorstep, CEI acts as a hub for exploration, primary research, and information exchange. CEI’s scope of work includes visiting educational programs/field courses for students in primary through graduate school; modeling green technologies that promote self-sufficiency; performing research and collaborating with outside scientists/organizations in areas related to tropical ecology and sustainability; building local capacity through education and training programs; and by hosting conferences.

Position Description :
Assist with running outdoor education programs for middle school and high school students at The Island School/Cape Eleuthera Institute. This is a leadership role that includes : organizing logistics, orientating participants to their surroundings, teaching fish identification and basic marine ecology courses, touring the island, snorkeling, creating morning exercise programs, sea kayaking, community outreach, camping, enforcing rules, dorm duties, and monitoring the well-being of students and their chaperones/instructors.

Secondary responsibilities may include assisting with research and work projects at the Cape Eleuthera Institute. Research opportunities may include, but are not limited to : cobia aquaculture, aquaponics, shark and bonefish research, etc.

Qualifications :
** Bachelor or Associate Degree in education, marine biology, environmental science or related field or minimum of 1 year experience as environmental or outdoor educator ** Wilderness First Responder, CPR, WAFA or Lifeguard certifications preferred ** Demonstrated ability swimming and snorkeling
** Boat driving and operation experience
** Familiarity with marine ecosystems, marine biology, environmental science, or sustainable systems
** Desire to live in a small, remote place and a “can-do” attitude to address challenges and opportunities of such a place
** Experience with planning and leading small expeditions for sea kayaking, beach camping, and snorkeling.
** Desire to work with children and adults of all ages
** Experience teaching/supervising students in an environmental setting
** Ability to live on a green sustainable campus without regular access to “city life” amenities.

Compensation :
Salary is commensurate with experience and includes room and board and medical insurance. A minimum 6 month contract is required. Typical working hours are Monday- Friday 7 :00 am-4:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am-Noon (with exceptions for multi-day programs, special academic rotations at The Island School, Summer Term, and other common schedule changes). Vacation and sick allowance.
